NOM 1122: La Rojeña (Cuervo, 1800)

NOM 1122 is Casa Cuervo’s La Rojeña distillery in Tequila, Jalisco. It is the most instructive NOM on this whole directory, because it makes both the cheapest mixto most people have tried and several genuinely good 100% agave bottles — and the number on the back is identical.

“Additive-free” records an inspection carried out before October 2024, when the public verified list was withdrawn. It is a historical record, not a check you can repeat today — here is why. A dash means no inspection was ever published, which is not an accusation.

What NOM 1122 tells you, and what it doesn’t

Look at the table above one column at a time. Jose Cuervo Especial Silver and Gold are mixto — Mexican law only requires 51% of the fermentable sugars to come from agave, and the rest can be cane or corn sugar. Cuervo Tradicional, the entire 1800 line, and Reserva de la Familia are 100% agave. Same distillery, same NOM, same company.

This is the clearest possible answer to the question people actually have when they look up a NOM number. The NOM identifies the producer. It is not a quality grade. Somebody who learns that 1122 is “the Cuervo one” and writes it off has just written off Reserva de la Familia.

What you want on the front label is the phrase 100% agave. If it is missing, you are holding a mixto, whatever the NOM says.

If you are choosing between them

Cuervo Especial Gold is the bottle most people picture when they think of tequila, and it is also the one most responsible for tequila’s reputation for rough mornings — the gold colour is added, not aged. Tradicional costs a little more and is a different drink. Our silver vs gold guide works through that comparison in detail.
